Embedded Assessment: What can modern psychology and educational theory teach us about Maria Montessori? Based on the book Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius,
by Angeline Stoll Lillard
I was fortunate that two years prior to and through my first year of my graduate program I was able to explore the Montessori Method and train with a seasoned Montessori Lead Directress. I would assert that in the three years I was there (one Primary cycle) I learned as much about myself as a teacher and the children I teach as I did in three years of graduate school. The Montessori Method and its discovery learning, with an emphasis on differentiation and uses of alternative assessment, was a perfect launch pad for my graduate career.
When I presented this piece I was able to have my daughter, an elementary age Montessori student, come and demonstrate the trinomial cube. (This Montessori work is shown within the PowerPoint as I explored motivation and assessment in the classroom. I wanted the teachers to see how long and how patient both the learner and educator must be to let this type of assessment bear fruit.) This started a rich discussion in class about allowing children to fail so that they can learn to self-correct and develop intrinsic motivation. Needless to say, many of the teachers in the class were very uncomfortable, and aghast that I would let a learner try again and again, and that I would restrain myself from helping until the learner asked.
